The significance of listening to music has been acknowledged for decades due to the benefits it brings to human souls. In recent decades, endless studies conducted have further discovered the contributions that music listening and instruction have on cognitive abilities and learning. Music instruction has recently been studied under the umbrella of the Mozart effect to know the cognitive benefits of participation in musical activities. There is a close relationship between music lessons and academic achievement for children. Using music lessons to improve the IQ tests of children between the ages of 12 and 14-years-old is a reliable method in any learning environment. The study confirmed that IQ tests for the children, improved considerably when they participated frequently in musical lessons. The performance also extended to academic lessons that play a crucial role in the lives of young children. Dege, Wehrum, Stark Schwarzer measured the IQ and academic self-concepts for children from different backgrounds, with social-economic status and the gender of the children proving not to affect the way they responded to musical lessons. The English Civil War The English Civil War was a complicated, intellectual war between the two most powerful forces in England: Parliament and the King. Conflicts between the two powers began when King Charles I dissolved Parliament in 1625 because they would not give him the money he demanded to fund his war against Spain. Parliament, who was lead by John Pym, felt that the King was showing favouritism towards the Roman Catholics, especially since Charles had recently married the Roman Catholic French Princess. Community Service Project Essay Example For Students

Community Service Project Essay During my volunteering service at New Utrecht High School at 1601 80th street, Brooklyn, N. Y, 11214, I had an interesting experience. I had volunteered for at least 12. 5 hours. The person that I volunteer to help out is Sharon Li (Ms. Li). She was a delightful and caring person. I had learned many valuable lessons from volunteering at this place. I would volunteer at around 9 am during school hours and ends at 10 am. I had volunteered around 48 mins everyday from Monday to Friday. To this day I still help out and volunteer to help out when i have the time. Everyday, after I had finished second period, I would go to the science department and I would start working. I would most likely enter early so that I can help Ms. Li out with whatever she needs help with. It was very important that I make it on time early, because my responsibilities are very dependable. Everyday , at 9 Am I would have to sort paper and help out the students who needs help with the work. This department provides a quiet area to their students so they can concentrate. I would sort out her paperwork once i get in at 9 Am. Without me ,Ms. Li would be doing more of a work. At 9:15 Am the students would start to walk in to get help with there homework, and I would go over to them to see if I can be at any assist to them. This is the part when my job comes in hand. I help mostly 11th grade students with their homework and classwork because Ms. Li is a chemistry teacher. Students would raise their hands or come over to me when they have a question, and I would walk to them, and answer their questions. if I have trouble I could always refer to Ms. Li. On top of all this, i would sometimes grades homeworks and tests. This goes on everyday, students would ask me for help on their homework. Whether it is a chemistry or and other science related problems, I would have to help them to so they could pass. This is also part of my responsibility and from time to time the AP of the science would come check on the classrooms to see if everything is fine. I would continue to grade their homework and classwork while the student have no more questions to ask me. Every time Ms. Li has a test day, I would have to grade the scan the test and grade them. I would also enter their test grades into the grading booklet. Most of the students in this center would achieve to get an almost to perfect score. As 10 AM hits, the bell would dismiss the students, and I would sign out and let Ms. Li sign my time sheet. This service had affected me in a positive way. I had the opportunity to learn how to tutor other school-mates. I also learned to have better explanations on problems. This service had opened my mind into what 11th grade students are learning now compared to my experience when I was in 11th grade. My community service was a positive experience because the environment was calm. The other volunteers were generous and nice. I would recommend this idea to other people who are going to volunteer in the future. I recommend this place because, its overall a great place to be in. The students are smart and patient. I feel that I can learn a lot through the work I chose. I feel this way because not only did i refresh my memories on my previous science. An example would be a earth science question. while i was trying to teach them explanation to the question, instead I actually learn something that I couldnt understand back when I was learning earth science. In this project, I learned how to communicate with my school mates and my boss. I had affected this center in many ways. The students had learned many useful tips from to attack their subject problems. As my last day came into place , my boss allowed me to volunteer for more hours because she was pleased with my performance. Mrs. Li had sign a letter stating my proof of volunteering at this place. She would track my hours and make sure that I was always careful in doing my work correctly and was always on my best behavior. She also said I was punctual and performed my duties well. Overall, this community service project had impacted both the students and I in many different ways.

Nerve Regeneration Topic: New ways to aid in nerve regeneration. General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform the audience about news techniques and mechanisms that aid in nerve regeneration. Central Idea Statement: The new techniques for nerve regeneration involving magnetic, electrical, and chemical mechanisms look very promising. INTRODUCTION I. The site is rather common: someone in a wheel chair unable to use their lower body, or worse, unable to function from their neck down because of an accident. You may even know one of these people. They all have one thing in common: spinal nerve injury. To the majority of us, one of the more famous and recent cases involving spinal trauma is that of Christopher Reeve, known to most of us as Superman. Reeve was riding his horse when he fell off, landed on the back of his head and twisted his neck. His spine was damaged near the second cervical vertebrae; that being two vertebrae away from the base of the skull. He states that after his accident he saw a handbook written in 1990 that "didn't even mention anyone higher than [the fourth cervical vertebrae] because 70 percent of them didn't live longer than five days. I am very lucky my injury happened at a time when treatment and surgery had improved." Dr. Cotman from UCI, who worked with Reeve says that Reeve remains optimistic that a cure is only a few million dollars away. II. Prior to the end of the Second World War, if a person survived a severe spinal cord injury, the injury still usually resulted in their early death. This was because of complications that accompanied the injury, such as infections to the kidneys and lungs. Though the development of new antibiotics has greatly improved life expectancy, until recently medical science had not been able to restore nerve function. III. According to researchers at the University of Alabama using data from the regional SCI Centers, there are 7,800 traumatic spinal cord injuries each year in the US. Yet these numbers do not represent accurate figures since 4,860 per year, die before reaching the hospital. Current estimates are that 250,000-400,000 individuals live with spinal cord injury or dysfunction; forty-four percent of these occur in motor vehicle accidents. More than half of these injuries occur to individuals who are single, and more than 80% of these individuals are male. IV. Within the last five years, a great many things have been happening in the area of neurological research. Research and treatment involving spinal and nerve injury has progressed considerably. In this speech I will inform you on the new and promising techniques that are currently undergoing testing for human treatment, in terminology that we will be able to understand. BODY I. The nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord, and all branching nerves. There are two parts: the central nervous system, or CNS, and the peripheral nervous system, or PNS. The CNS, consists of the brain and spinal cord, while the PNS involves all the nerves that branch off from the spinal cord to the extremities. A. When the spine is crushed or bent in an extreme accident, the spinal cord inside is severely bruised and compressed, causing localized injury and death to many of the nerve cells and their fibers. Some of injured nerves fibers survive intact, but lose their electrical insulation, or myelin, over the very short distance of the injury zone. Nerve impulses are blocked at this point. 1. The myelin is the part of the nerve that actually transfers the electrical signal that enables your muscles to move when you want them to move. B. Nerves regenerate at the rate of about a cm a month. Keep in mind that not all nerves can regenerate (the spinal cord is a prime example) and if a nerve is too damaged or is severed it cannot come back C. Peripheral nerves will regenerate to a certain extent on their own, but they don't regenerate over very long distances. D. The big problem with treating spinal injuries is the fact that mature nerve tissue does not spontaneously regenerate. II. The three basic ways to treat nerve damage are: first, produce regeneration of the remaining segment of a nerve fiber, or make new connections on the other side of the injury. Second, prevent or rescue the damaged nerve fiber from proceeding on to separation, or perhaps even functionally reunite the two segments, so that both portions of the fiber survive. Or third, facilitate nerve impulse traffic to cross the region of injury
